My first 10 years in Utena

Remember  so many things from my life as a little girl. We lived in a rented house in the mountain, by one of the lakes. Do not remember the name.
My room had a book case, made out of bamboo- on top of it stood a vase with phesant feathers-. They were a rare things in Lithuania. In the darkness they looked like goasts, and I use to hide under the blanket and shiver! Did the same when storms came. Loved to run to my parents bedroom and get in to their bed too! *It was  a Sunday morning ritual.
My Dad was a CONTROLER of Utena and Zarasai  states and he had to travel a lot. So he baught a HARLEY DAVIDSON motor cycle- used to be gone for weeks. I missed him so! I remember him sending his dirty laundry home- and I used to smell it and say- smells like Dad-TETUKAS,- that is how I use to call him!
He was the only one that smoked so that is why his laundry smelled like him!

Second still Utena

It seamsI lost one blog. so will write another one. How there was a jewish house that I used to pass caryiyng the bouques to Mothers friends and a little girl always asked me" duok man kvetke"/which ment- give me a flower?, So I used to pick a few flowers and give it to her! I wander- where is she now?
There were no TV or computers then, so we read a lot, played cards a lot, visited friend, played cowboys and Indians/ very popular then/, went to the movies, Winter time did all the Winter Sports, in the Fall- went mashrooming, barry picking and hazel nutt picking in the woods. My brother George finished primary school and started Gimnazija. They changed the system, so my parents hiered a tutor and I did 2 grades in one year with two boys- Leonas Vaskelis and Kostas Jasutis.
My Dad was beeing moved to KAUNAS, so I passed the egzams to AUSROS MERGAICIU GIMNAZIJA, which was the best school for girls.
There are so many things to write about= hard to choose!

My childhood

We spend each Summer a month at my Granparents Prialgauskas in Zemaitija and a month in Smilgelius, the farm near Panevezys that my Father inherited from Laurinaitis family.  I will talk about it later. We were braught up on organic food, fresh air and nature. It was an ideal childhood. Both my Mother and Grangmother spoke 5 languages, played piano, were gourmet cooks and were real ladies. At that time it was a rare thing- I was very proud of my family. I was the 5th generation that lerned to play on the same baby Grand that was passed on in the family. Our furniture were all antique- I hated it at the time! Now I would treasure it!
My parents were very progresive, modern gardeners. Used to get seeds from Holland, grew corn, all kinds of vegies and our flower gardens were fameus in town. People use to come on Sundays just to walk by and see them! Mother used to cut some , make bouquets and make me deliver to her friends.

Utena

I was 2 years old when e moved to Utena- my brother George was 4. My Dad worked for Lithuanian Governament- he was a CONTROLER os 2 states- Utenos and Zarasu. Both states were full of small lakes, forestts- lots of resort places. Town of Utena was small, I guess 10000 population and very muck Class concheus. PONAI- and lower class servants and town people. We rented a house on the lake- it was fun during the Summer to swim and during the winter to scate and go down the hill with the sled. My Dad had this big , tabagen style , sled made for us- we used to hitch our Dog, Rex, in to it. George went to Gimnazija after he finished lower school, which was in an old estate building, with lovely park around it. We used to play cowboys and Indians there. George always had his friends in to play- and I tried to fit in with the oys.
From early on I was very atletic, ran, swam, climbed trees.
Winters were long- we played a lot of cards, games, Produced plays.
My first Girl Scout Camp was when I was 7 - for 2 weeks, in Zarasai woods. Next time about that....

Leukadija- we used to call her KADE

So here it goes.
I always wandered why Kade was kike a part of the family. When my Mother finished the Girls Bording school in Liepaja, Latvia- she went to St Petersburg to the University, Must have been like 11915  or so,. While she was there, the Russian Revolusion started. But that is again another story. In 1918 lithuania became Independent  but it took her 2 years to come home through poland and other countries
When she arrived  home, BEBRUNGAS country estate, she found her parents and a little boy IGNAS, who was like 10 years old and she was told, that he was he brother! I realy dio not know when she found out that he was Leukadijos Stonaites and her fathers, Vaclovas Prialgauskas son!. Leukadija was a made in that family, very prity, young- the rest is history!
Most amazing thing that my Grandmother adopted the boy and kept Leukadija in the house and when my Mother got married- Leukadija became her house keeper. And she was like the member of our family.  So this is the story I wanted to finish!

More about my childhood

I am back- writing about my childhood...
I was born in Birzai, July 5th, 1925. Had an older brother Jurgis Vaclovas, born 1923, August 17th.
We moved to Utena when I was 2 years oldl My Dad worked for the Lithuanian Goverment- was a Controler of two Lithuanian states.
Mother was very involwed in scouts, school commities and all kinds of womans clubs. My Granmother ,Stanislava Prialgauskas lived with us when my Grandfather died. Sche was very educated lady, Spoke 5 languages, played piano= so did my Mother. That was a rare thing of the women in that time.
Utena was a small town in NEof Lithuania, surounded with lakes and forests. I started camping with the girl scouts when I was 7.
Almost droned in the lake. We actually lived on the hill by the lake- and I lerned to swimm and boat very early in my life. We used to swim across the lake all by ourselfs, like 3 girls, 7 years old= no life gard, no boats near y- do not know how we were alowed to do this- ut those were different days.
Mashrooming was the Fall family ocupation- we all new which mashrooms were good to eat. They dried it, Marinated it- lasted all Winter.
Before I go any further, very important member of our family was our house keeper, Liaukadija Stonaite, From Rietavas, zemaitija.
SHe actualy was much more then tarnaite- but I found out about it only when I was 14 . Will write abbout it tomorrow,.

Still Juras and Morgans wedding

Just wanted to finish a little telling the story.
Rehersal diner was lovely at Anthonies rest. on rt 6a in Yarmouth port- and wedding was in a little church in Osterville and the reception- at East Bay Lodge. We had 2 Wedding cakes- one traditional, that I decorated with flowers- and a BAUMKUCHEN, that Jura braught from BALTIMORE.
Morgan made a lovely speach in LITHUANIAN language- all the lits cried because tthey loved it and Americans cried looking at us!.... The song that the Bride and the Groom danced too was "lets fall in love".
Next day we had 50 people for a reception on our deck and then they left for Europe fot the Honeymoon!

Juras and Morgans SILVER ANNIVERSARY

Well, twenty five years ago today we all were very busy getting ready for Juras and Morgans wedding. It was to be in East Bay Lodge in Osterville and we were moving in there that day to the Motel next door to be near the church and the Reception
And I was working on a Bridal bouquet, brides maids bouques, all the center peaces for the reception, church flowers and the wedding cake.
My work room was E.B.L. garage and they let me use their kitchen coolers.Boxes of egsotic flowers were flown in from Grass Roots in Dallas. Daddy was send out in to the feelds to pick Quinne Anns Lace.
Over a hundred guests were on the Cape already staying in all kind of places.
Rehersal diner was at ANTHONIES  restorant- it was lovely. We met a lot of Morgans relatives for the first time. We all were very happy about the Wedding-loved Morgano- they made a lovely couple.
I do not know what to write- it is so much I would like to tell! I will continue tomorrow!

Family (Continued)

My Dad was born 1895, April 23, /St. George- Jurgis  day/ and was named Jurgis. He was the thirteenth child of Jonas LAURINAITIS  and MORTA LAURINAITIENE, IN  PUMPENU VALSCIUS, PANEVEZIO  apskritis, SMILGELIU KAIME ,  where his family owned a 43 hektarus Farm.

Family (Continued)

I do not write when people are around- I think I will write more at home.

Been here since before Christmas!

BABUNELE- that is how we used to call her. But I will write about Prialgauskas more later

Now it is time to Write about LAURINAITIS family- that’s who I was and that is whom my mother married in to.

Family (Continued)

. After she got married, they lived on a small country estate in Zemaitija, near Plunge and had one daughter Stanislava- that is my Mother. She was send to Liepaja, Latvija, Girls Boarding school, where she became friends with another girl from Palanga- Marija Kentraite, who later became my Mother in Law- but she never new that. But that is another part of my story- will be told later.

My Grand father Prialgauskas, died from a stroke on my Confirmation day. I was like 14 years old and Grandmother came to live with us to Kaunas. She was a real oldfasioned Lady, always dressed nicely, with a pin at her neck- still smoking!

Family

Just a few words today. It will be peaced together- but still my story!

As far as I remember, her father, Vaclovas Prialgauskas, was born in Telsius too. He was a son of “Zemaiciu Bajoras Lithuanian aristocracy, that lived in a small estate on Prialga river/later named Babrunga/ That is where the name PRIALGAUSKAS came from. He was tall, very handsome man, educated and was in charge ofCount Tiskevicius lands. We called him”DZIADUNIA”- AND I SWAS 14 YEARS OLD WHEN HE DIED FROM STROKE.

AFTER THAT, MY GRANDMOTHER- STANISLAVA-ZEMAITAITE- PRIALGAUSKIENE CAME TO LIVE WITH US AND WE CALLED HER -babunia.

SHE WAS A DAUGHTER OF A BAJORAS FROM VILIUS REGION, WHOSE MOTHER DIED EARLY AND LEFT 5 DAUGHTERS- MY GR4ANDMOTHER BEEING THE OLDEST. THEY HAD A GERMAN GOVERNESS. MY GRANDMOTHER AND HER SISTERS WERE SEND TO A GIRLS BOARDING SCHOOL IN LIEPAJA, latvia.

SHE SPOKE 5 LANGUAGES, PLAYED PIANO AND WAS A REAL LADY!

And she smoked! Which was veru unusual for a woman in those days! She told me, that she used to make home made cigarettes for her governess, and used to sneak some off and smoke in the bushes.

She was send to the German nunns Boarding school- spoke fluently German, Polish, Rusian, French and Lithuanian, played pijano beautifly and had a waist that you could measure with two hands!

Beginning

Today is the day I am going to start telling my life’. Not for me- but for my children and grandchildren and for generations to come. All I remember about my family and  Koncius family and our life in Lithuania. It may be long and not in sequence- but that is how my mind works. So be patient while you read it.

My name is IRENA GRAZINA LAURINAITIS -KONCIUS.

/used to be Laurinaityte- Konciene./

My parents were Stanislava PRIALGAUSKAITE- LAURINAITIENE   and JURGIS LAURINAITIS. As far as I remember, my Mom was born 1893, in June, in Telsiai, Lithuania, and my Dad in 1895 in Pumpenai, Lithuania.

At this point I am going to thank my Grand son, Spencer Koncius CLARK   for teaching me to use the computer and setting this up so I could write my story. In a way- this is every bodie’s story=just will start with me! / I call him SPENCEROOOOO/.

Everybody was asking me, when I am going to write my story- well, I started!

Sigita is born tomorrow!

This is a short note to honor my second daughter- Sigita-Irena birth tomorrow.
 HAPPY   BIRTHDAY,Siguli!
 Love you, Mama
